Quiet Elegance on the Hudson: Breaking Ground at One&Only
On Wednesday evening, I had the pleasure of attending the groundbreaking of One&Only Private Homes in Hyde Park, New York, set above the Hudson River beside the Culinary Institute of America.
The setting alone was worth the trip. It was quiet, peaceful and deeply rooted in nature, yet refined in a way that is hard to describe without seeing it. Sometimes you arrive at a cottage and feel the rusticity of cottage country. The Hudson Valley is different. The calm is the same, but there is an elegance to it that you don’t find in many other markets. It’s a feeling I get every time I’m there.
The evening matched the landscape. Hanging over the main bar was a chandelier of fresh corn, the husks peeled back and arranged in circular tiers, closer to an art installation than a decoration. Members of the development team spoke about the vision for the community, and the Culinary Institute outdid themselves with a harvest table whose flavours were every bit as exquisite as the spread was generous. The weather couldn’t have been better: a warm fall evening, a light breeze, and the sun setting over the Hudson.
What stood out to me most, however, was how naturally the whole project fits its place. The One&Only name, from the Kerzner family behind Atlantis, is better known in the world’s resort destinations than in North America. Here it meets a setting defined by restraint rather than spectacle.
Days like this are a reminder that true luxury lies in the setting and the care taken with it. I’ve put together a page with the details for anyone who would like to learn more.
